Immortal Live: Gramercy Theater, NYC 2/19/11

by James Zalucky www.metalinjection.ne

So it seems that, since most of my Metal Injection colleagues were off on vacation last weekend (some in Hawaii, some in Sweden- not sure who I'm more jealous of), it was up to me to go down to Manhattan and see Absu and Immortal, and report on it to you guys. Immortal doesn't come to the US that often, and with the short list of cities on the tour, my buddy Colin and I were lucky to see them altogether. So in honor of Black Metal History Month, here you are:
We arrived about 20 minutes before the doors opened, which obliged us to stand in line that had formed outside. Luckily enough there was no shortage of fellow metal-nerds to chat with. From the mood of the crowd outside, I knew this was going to be a fun night.
I had never been to the Gramercy Theater before, but I have to say my first impressions were very good. As far as size goes, I think it was the perfect venue for this show, aside from the obvious problem of it selling out so quickly (Good thing I bought my tickets in November). The drinks were ridiculously expensive, but this was to be expected. My only real complaint of the night was the sound. Not the acoustics themselves, but the balancing of both bands. In both cases, especially with Absu, the bass guitar and kick-drums were way too loud, nearly washing out the guitar. Aside from this, I found the the place to be pretty agreeable.
Other than some casual listening to their self-titled album, I was relatively unfamiliar to Dallas' Absu. As the band opened their set, I stood toward the back of the floor and couldn't see the stage very well. From my vantage point, I could only see a drumset, a guitarist, and bassist. As I looked closer I suddenly realized, "Holy crap! The drummer is the singer…and he's awesome!" I was extremely impressed. One has to imagine the amount of stamina and muscle memory it takes to coordinate simultaneous drumming and singing. With a bright silver headband and light corpsepaint on, Proscriptor McGovern as he calls himself put on a great show. Gleefully he would stand up between each song, screaming first and then telling a story "In 1997!!! Absu created a song called…" and would go on from there before each song, "AND THEN, In 2001 Absu (something, something, something)!!!". This was a certain epic effect that, while perhaps a little silly, added to the fun of the performance. Of the songs they played I enjoyed Never Blow Out the Eastern Candle, and Highland Tyrant Attack the most.
The break between the bands went on for about an hour, and then Immortal took to the stage. ImmortalAll Shall Fall before storming through a fantastic rendition of Sons of Northern Darkness. In line with my concert-going tradition, I knew I had to go crowd surfing at least once, which allowed me a closer look at Abbath and Apollyon, with their signature leather gear and corpse paint in full view. If you managed to get close you could see Abbath's eyes move back and forth as he scanned the audience. Abbath was at his charismatic best, raising his arms into the air between songs to invoke the cheers from the audience. It's good to see a frontman interact with his audience: put on an amazing performance, opening with
"So how ya doing New York City?!" ::loud cheer::
"Let me hear the ladies!" ::not quite as loud cheer:: (oh well)
Immortal certainly delivered with their set-list: One By One, The Rise of Darkness, Hordes to War, Withstand the Fall of Time, The Sun No Longer Rises, and the list goes on
Of course I can't forget to mention, In My Kingdom Cold, the song that made me and Colin into Immortal fans in the first place. I have a lot of memories attached to the song, so hearing it live was just exhilarating. I was curious to see what older material they would pull out and they didn't disappoint. Towards the end of the set, Abbath approached the mic and muttered, "we're gonna go back now…to Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms". I've always loved Battles in the North so I was pretty pumped about this. Also, when you witness a band's live show, it can make you appreciate certain songs more than their studio versions. Tyrants had never been one of my favorites from Immortal, but the live experience of the song was absolutely incredible, as was their entire set. The musical performance was absolutely flawless, except for the aforementioned drowning of the guitar sound. Did the sound guy just fall asleep on the mixer or something?
The mood of the evening was overwhelmingly positive and I met a lot of really cool people. During certain crowd favorites, the pit got pretty rowdy, but was a little hindered…maybe because of that one big dude who just kind of stood in the middle of the pit and kept his arms hovering around him, pushing whoever came close to him. As he beat his chest, all sweaty and shirtless, a girl turned to me, "he looks like a gorilla!". He had that sort of blank stare that says: "I've had too many concussions…and I have no idea who this band is". Some of the kids started to get all angry about him, but I just found it kind of amusing.
Anyway, after the show ended my friend and I took the L over to Brooklyn and found our way over to Duff's for some after show celebration…but that's another story. There are some concert experiences that make me think "wow, THIS is what a metal show should be like", and last Saturday's concert was definitely one of those times.
(PS- you like that picture up at the top? Not bad for a camera phone huh?)
If you've never seen Immortal live, perhaps these professionally filmed live clips from the Graspop festival can give you an idea of what the band is like live.

Mike Portnoy Leaves AVENGED SEVENFOLD; Attempts & Fails to Rejoin DREAM THEATER

www.metalinjection.net
A few days ago Mike Portnoy formally announced he has fulfilled his agreement with Avenged Sevenfold and will no longer be with the band. Mike mentioned that he offered to extend his stay, but the band respectfully declined, saying it's time for them to move forward and find a permanent member.
You may remember Noa's editorial about how Avenged was like the young-girl rebound for Portnoy after breaking up with his old love. So, what does one do when getting dumped by your rebound? Go back to your old girlfriend, of course! In a post on his forum, Portnoy confirmed he reached out to his former bandmates:
"Fairly recently, I reached out to the guys to try and make amends and offered to reconcile for the sake of having peace back in our lives… (plus I know how much it meant to a lot of the fans…)
"I figured it was still possible to try and save us, because they hadn't made any announcements yet or begun any public activity with another drummer… but sadly, they declined my offer (well, actually their lawyer did… they didn't even tell me themselves….)
"Sorry, gang, I honestly gave it my all…
"So now the fans on my Twitter and Facebook can please stop asking me to go back to DREAM THEATER… I tried, and the door is now shut… The ball is now in their court, not mine…
"I'm not crying or looking for mercy by posting this… I am merely trying to set the record straight as that is always the most important thing about my relationship with you guys… No BS, no spins, nothing to hide… and for better or for worse, I tell it like it is… I've also recently seen some people accuse my online activity of 'looking for attention or media coverage,' or 'looking for sympathy,' but it's honestly none of the above… I merely value having an open and active communication with my fans… Always have, always will… It is the cornerstone of everything I've done since day #1 with Dream Theater…
"This was posted here FOR YOU GUYS to know about… here on MY message board on MY website… If it ends up on Blabbermouth or wherever else, that is THEIR choice to spread, I did not request it or send out a 'press release'…
"Anyways, onward and upward…
"I've got a lot of great music and ideas waiting to come out of me and alot of exciting collaborations in the works….so goodbye 2010…bring on 2011!"
Ouch! Sick burn. The band didn't even tell him themselves, they got their lawyer to do it. At least Mike made an attempt to rejoin the band. Although, I couldn't see Dream Theater do anything BUT turn Mike down at this point, if only because it would make them look really bad otherwise.
For those interested in what Avenged Sevenfold has to say on the matter, here is a statement they released:
“For the past few months, we’ve been blessed with Mike Portnoy’s talent and humanity. When Mike agreed to tour with us, it was only through the end of 2010. We always knew we’d need to find another solution for 2011 and beyond. And it’s time for us to take that next step. We know we are not ready to add another permanent member of Avenged Sevenfold. We don’t know if we will ever be. But if we do, it will only be with someone who is not only a brilliant drummer, but also someone we’ve gotten to know well on the road and off, and who you the fans have had a chance to get to know, and hopefully accept. In other words, in this family, we take these steps together, band and our extended fan family.
We are lucky to be surrounded by so many friends, many of whom knew [late Avenged Sevenfold drummer] Jimmy ['The Rev' Sullivan] very well personally, as well as our band and Jimmy’s drumming talent and style. These friends have introduced us to several amazing drummers. We have decided to take one of them out starting in January. He will not be a member of Avenged Sevenfold. He will be someone you and we are getting to know. Perhaps this drummer will be a fit. Perhaps not. One thing is for sure. Over time we will find someone who helps us continue our quest to make the music we love for the fans we love.

Mike and the band agree that can’t be him. Why? Long before there was an Avenged Sevenfold, there were members of this band who looked up to Mike and, in Jimmy’s case, learned a lot from watching Mike play. He is a brilliant writer, producer and, of course, drummer. Because of that, the world and we would always see it as Avenged Sevenfold with Mike Portnoy.
We take a lot of pride in Avenged Sevenfold being about something greater than any individuals. It’s about the music, the fans and the friends and family we have as well as continuing our best friends legacy. Please give whoever we try your love and support….and the benefit of the doubt. They won’t be Jimmy. Who could be? But he will be himself, with his own special talents and creativity. And that’s all we could ever look for. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for everything you’v

Mike Portnoy to drum for AVENGED SEVENFOLD throughout 2010

www.metalinjection.net
When Avenged Sevenfold announced they will spend the summer on the Rockstar Uproar tour, many wondered who would be drumming for the band? Wonder no more! After session drumming on their upcoming release, Portnoy has agreed to fill in throughout 2010.
For those of you who fear that this would get in the way of Portnoy's day job, fat chance! Portnoy commented saying “Although I wish I could stay on board with Avenged Sevenfold in a more permanent capacity, the reality is that I am committed to Dream Theater as my main priority (that is my baby after all!), and I will need to resume work with Dream Theater to start a new album at some point in 2011.”
This is certainly quite a coup for A7X and I'm sure Portnoy will have a fun time spending the summer playing to gigantic amphitheaters full of kids. Maybe some of those kids would be intrigued and end up checking out Portnoy's other gig, Dream Theater in the process.

DREAM THEATER Break Up Reaches Junior High School Level of Drama

One of the biggest stories of the year will no doubt be Mike Portnoy's decision to quit Dream Theater. The world was shocked SHOCKED when Mike released his statement a few weeks ago. I thought that Mike handled everything very professionally (at least to the public) and respected his decision. As Noa so eloquently pointed out, he was just looking for some new musical pussy to snatch. If you thought the rest of Dream Theater were going to just sit idly by, you are wrong!
While being interviewed about his latest solo release, DT frontman James LaBrie had this to say about Mike's departure:
Q: Are you sad, James? I mean, this is a huge shift in the world of DREAM THEATER and progressive rock. It's a fucking earthquake.
LaBrie: "You know what?! I'm not sad at all. I've gotta be honest with you. I think that everyone out there needs to know that there's four guys in the band that are… We're excited, we're really looking forward to the next chapter. And I think one of the other things that everyone really has to remember is that there's four more-than-capable guys there. We're all extremely… I know everyone is out there going, 'Holy shit! Is this guy full of himself or what?' But I wanna say it like it is. There's four very capable people in the band, and we're all talented and we all know what we're doing, and we're all capable of doing everything and keeping DREAM THEATER exactly what it's been and bringing it to another level and bringing it to uncharted waters, but I think very exciting and fulfilling waters. So, no, we're not down. I can guarantee you none of us are down. We're actially pretty excited… and very positive."
Ouch! This could be read one of two ways: One, they hate Portnoy, or two, they realized that they needed to keep going so they decided to move along and do what needed to be done. When Portnoy saw the headline his feelings were hurt. Aww. Then, Portnoy took this developing fued to the next level. He started deleting threads about LaBrie's solo record off the MikePortnoy.com message boards. TAKE THAT LaBRIE!!! When somebody on the forum called Portnoy out on this behavior he responded:
"I was willing to ignore that the [Dream Theater] guys insisted all Portnoy-related stuff be removed from DreamTheater.net… but then on Monday reading the Blabbermouth headlines with James [LaBrie] insensitively proclaiming they are 'not sad at all' about my departure from DREAM THEATER, I cannot in 'happy' standing promote his solo tour…. I am so sad it comes to this, but I am even more shocked and hurt by James' completely disrespectful quote."
NANANAPOO POOO! You can't promote your album on my site. Ha! HA!!! Naturally, LaBrie rebutted Portnoy's comments saying:
"It seems there is a misunderstanding. When I said I was not sad with Mike's departure, it, unfortunately, leaves plenty of room to misconstrue such words. No one can tell you or me how to think and feel. Initially with Mike's departure I was extremely upset, down and shocked. But one needs to deal and work through these emotions in order to arrive at a more positive and optimistic place. That is where I am now and was when the interview took place. Let me put it more plain and simple. Life does not afford us the luxury to wallow in our sorrow. You have to deal with the situation at hand and make it a productive and positive endeavor. In other words, onward and upward. Mike made it perfectly clear why he chose the current path. I would much rather his words be the definitive answer. In the end, does it really matter what our views are? Other than human curiosity, it doesn't change a thing. I have said my piece and believe there is no room for misinterpretation. I will give no further weight to this subject; all has been said."
Oh shit!! LaBrie is going the silent treatment route. TAKE THAT PORTNOY!!!
OK, seriously, guys? You're deleting forum posts and other mentions? Are you guys 12 years old or super-successful musicians who sold thousands if not millions of records worldwide? Step one would be to stop talking about each other and step two is move on with your fucking lives and stop being giant babies. We get it, you split up, get over it!
Oh, and Portnoy announced he will be touring with Avenged Sevenfold for the entirety of their album cycle.

A Female Perspective on Why Portnoy Quit Dream Theater

www.metalinjection.net
As I sit here lamenting over Mike Portnoy's break up with Dream Theater I ask myself, why? Why am I eating a powdered donut over my new laptop? Because Mike Portnoy broke my heart. That's why.
Honestly, I don't know why I was so shocked. Over the last couple of years Portnoy's been frolicking with other bands looking for something else to tickle his pickle. Now at the age of 43, after growing out his hair and dying his goatee a multitude of colors, I get it. He's going through mid-life crisis! Where as most men pierce their ears and look for some young broad to shack up with, he is looking to get his fix (see what I did there?) from some young bitches who are in a band. Dream Theater's mistake was to let Portnoy see other people.
In Dream Theater, Mike had to do everything, cook, clean, the dishes, etc. With all of these other bands, Mike just got the sexual release. When a long relationship grows stale and new pussy makes itself available, the end is nigh.
So Mike, go forth and get all the musical pussy you can. Hang out with all the young bands you want, and really put yourself out there. Because you know at the end of the day, no girl will treat you as right as Dream Theater. You have 11 children together ferrchristsakes! You'll come crawling back, I know it. Just make sure not to catch hepatitis C after hanging out with some of these younger girls.

Nightmare To Remember lyrics

Songwriters: Myung, John Ro; Petrucci, John P; Portnoy, Michael S; Rudess, Jordan Charles;

A nightmare to remember, I'd never be the same
What began as laughter so soon would turn to pain
The sky was clear and frigid, the air was thick and still
Now I'm not one to soon forget and I bet I never will

Picture for a moment the perfect irony
A flawless new beginning eclipsed by tragedy
The uninvited stranger started dancing on his own
So we said goodbye to the glowing bride
And we made our way back home

Life was so simple then, we were so innocent
Father and mother holding each other

Without warning out of nowhere
Like a bullet from the night
Crushing glass, rubber and steel
Scorching fire, glowing light

Screams of terror, pain of fear
Sound of sirens, smoke in my eyes
Sudden stillness, blackened silence
No more screaming, no more cries

Stunned and bewildered, cold and afraid
Torn up and broken, frightened and dazed
Stunned and bewildered, cold and afraid
Torn up and broken, frightened and dazed

Lying on the table in this unfamiliar place
I'm greeted by a stranger, a man without a face
He said, "Son, do you remember? Do you even know your name?"
Then he shined a light into my eyes
And said, "Take this for the pain"
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/d/dream-theater-lyrics/nightmare-to-remember-lyrics.html ]

Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony
I am endlessly falling lost in this wonderful misery
In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony

"Tell me does this hurt you?", said the faceless man
Can you move all of your fingers? Can you try your best to stand?
I asked about the others, is everyone okay?
He told me not to worry as he turned and looked away

Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony
I am endlessly falling lost in this wonderful misery
In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony

Day after day and night after night
Replaying the events, did they ever see the red light?
Over and over, scene by scene
Like a reoccurring nightmare haunting my dreams

How can you prepare for what would happened next?
No son should ever have to see his father such a mess
It's a miracle he lived, it's a blessing no one died
By the grace of God above everyone survived

Life was so simple then, we were so innocent
It will stay with us forever, a nightmare to remember

Fatal Tragedy lyrics

Alone at night
I feel so strange
I need to find
All the answers to my dreams

When I sleep at night
I hear the cries
What does this mean?

I shut the door and traveled to another home
I met an older man, he seemed to be alone
I felt that I could trust him
He talked to me that night;

"Lad did you know a girl was murdered here?"
"This fatal tragedy was talked about for years"
Victoria's gone forever
Only memories remain
She passed away
She was so young

Without love
Without truth
There can be no turning back

Without faith
(From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/d/dream-theater-lyrics/fatal-tragedy-lyrics.html)
Without hope
There can be no peace of mind

As the night went on
I started to find my way
I learned about a tragedy
A mystery still today

I tried to get more answers
But he said, "You're on your own."
Then he turned away and left me
As I stand there all alone
He said, "You'll know the truth
As you future days unfold"

Without love
Without truth
There can be no turning back

Without faith
Without hope
There can be no peace of mind

Hypnotherapist:

"Now it is time to see how you died.
